Wicklow SPCA Sharpshill are once again hosting their “All about Animals” event on Sunday April 30th from 11am until 5pm in our tented village in Ballygannon Mor, Rathdrum. It will be an afternoon of information and displays from a a variety of groups who work with animals in our community. Sherwood Aviary and Pet Farm will be here to entertain children. Official opening at noon by Minister of State, Andrew Doyle.

In the Education Tent there will be 14 experts, each speaking on their animal related work. Once finished with their presentation many of our speakers will be working with their animals in our demonstration arena while others will be available to speak with the public in their individual tents in the Welfare Village.

The Welfare Tents will include local and national animal organisations including Dublin Zoo, IHWT, The Reptile Zoo, The Seal Sanctuary, Swift Conservation, Alpacca Ireland and Ben Harden Honeybees, Irish Draugh Breeders Association, Wicklow Feral Cats, The Donkey Sanctuary, National Parks and Wildlife Services happy to share their experience.

The Retail Tents will have a wide range of suppliers to the animal world. Meet Photogrophers, Crafters, Animals Feed specialists, Groomers and people working in the arena of fashion for your favourite pets.

Displays on the day from the Garda Mounted Unit, Garda Canine Unit, Dogs for the Disabled, Civil Defence Canine Team, Irish Therapy Dogs and dogs that want to have fun. Wonderpaws will be here giving demonstrations on training, grooming and showing off the skills of their agility dogs.

Animals play a big part in our lives so come along; be entertained, be educated.

Travelling on the M11 from Bray:

  • Take Exit 18
  • Go straight across the first roundabout
  • When you get to the 2nd roundabout take the 3rd exit which brings you across the motorway and onto another roundabout, Take the 2nd exit off the roundabout and

Travelling on M11 from Arklow

  • Take Junction 18 ( opposite The Beehive Pub)
    • Then take the 1st Exit as you come off the Roundabout.
  • Follow the signs for Killossery Botanic Gardens and All about Animals fingerposts.
  • Continue on until you come to a T -junction signposted Wicklow SPCA Sharpshill to you right.
  • We are about 1 km down this road on your right.It takes about 8 minutes to Sharpshill from the M11

Travelling from Rathnew

  • Follow the signs for M11 and exit at Junction 18.

Travelling from Rathdrum

  • Take the Wicklow road R752 out of the village
  • Follow this road until you see a signpost on your right pointing to Wicklow SPCA Sharpshill

Travelling from Wicklow Town

  • Take the R751 towards the Beehive pub and M11
  • Go straight ahead over motorway bridge and take 1st exit at the roudabout
  • Follow the signs for Killossery Botanic Gardens and All about Animals fingerposts.
  • Continue on until you come to a T -junction signposted Wicklow SPCA Sharpshill to you right.

12:00 Andrew Doyle

Minister of State for Food, Forestry and Horticulture will formally open the event.

12:15 Ben Harden

Gorey based Beekeeper and supplier of knowledge and products for established beekeepers and those who are considering keeping them. Ben has spoken widely on the nutritional value of Honey, importance of Honey Bees and their impact on our environment.

12:30 Irish Horse Welfare Trust

Established in 1999 to help the plight of Irish Horses and Ponies. It is Ireland’s largest dedicated equine charity. Their speakers will share their stories of rescues, the rehabilitation they do before rehoming their horses. They will also talk about their role as educators, their workshops and training for horse owners.

12:45 Dogs for the Disabled

This Cork based charity ( Founded in 2007 to service a need not being met in Ireland) tells us that 85% of their Dogs are partnered with children with physical disabilities. Their real life stories will open your heart and mind to the work carried out by the charity, the Dogs they train and the impact they have on the lives of the people they are partnered with.

13:00 The Garda Dog Support Unit & Garda Horse Support Unit

The Dog unit is part of the Garda Operational Support Unit. They have a Dublin base in Kilmainham Garda Stationa and also a southern region base.Their roles include Searching for Suspects of crime, Most of the Dogs are trained as drug detector dogs and all are trained to work during serious public order disturbances.

13:15 The National Reptile Zoo

Ireland's only dedicated Reptile Zoo is based in Gowran, County Kilkenny, and it provides its visitors with a unique , hands-on experience with the opportunity to hold and touch some of the world’s most fascinating creatures. The National Reptile Zoo's Animal Collection Manager, Jonny, will deliver his presentation "Reptiles and The Pet Trade in Ireland" and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have after his presentation

13:35 The National Parks and Wildlife services

The National Parks and Wildlife services manage the Irish States Conservation. Last year the speakers opened our eyes to the broad range of services the NPWS is responsible for. They include the designation and conservation of National Heritage Areas and Special areas of Conservation. Their tent drew in the crowds as it was a treasure trove of information and displays to anyone interested in Irelands wildlife, heritage, conservation and our National Parks.

13:50 The Blue Cross

This long established charity, easily recognisable by their distinctive logo is well known to most animal owners . Many of us associate it with every thing equine ( Equine Ambulances) while others recognise it from their Mobile Veterinary Clinics and many other services. Speakers will share their experiences and inform visitors of the services they provide and how to avail of them..

14:05 Revenue Enforcement Officers

Revenue enforcement officers will talk to us about the role of their Detector Dog Teams as they identify, confront and tackle tobacco, drugs and cash smuggling. These illegal activities operate in the shadow economy, undermine the tax system and fund organised criminal groups. The detector dogs and their handlers work as a close-knit team and face significant challenges and take on huge responsibilities every working day. During the presentation, they will tell us about their working day, give displays of the work the Detector Dog Teams do, and explain how we, the general public, can assist them in their role.

14.35pm Dublin Zoo

Keepers from Dublin Zoo will once again share stories of whats happening at Dublin Zoo and share stories of the work they carry out on conservations projects around the world.

15:05 Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE

Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE) offers a broad range of part-time and full time accredited courses to its many students. During their presentation we look forward to learning of courses available to people interested in preparing for a career working with animals. Their speaker will be available to give individual advice and information in the tented village until 5pm. .

15:20 Feral Cats Wicklow

We are lucky here in Wicklow SPCA to have a three dedicated Cat Welfare groups with us for All About Animals. Whilst each is an independent organisation they share a common interest in the protection of cats, and feral cats in particular. Aughrim , Arklow Cat Rescue and Greystones Kitty Hostel work Trapping, Neutering and Returning Feral cats to the colonies they are taken from. .

Agri-Aware is the Irish Agri-food educational body. It is a charitable trust funded by the Irish Farming Community and Agri-food industry. During their presentation they will speak about how they work to improve the image and understanding of agricultural farming and the food industry amongst the general public.
